Sometimes you can live in a city for four years and still not see some of its most famous landmarks. I don’t think there’s anyone on this planet who isn’t familiar with the Hollywood sign, and whenever I see it in the distance (on the off chance the smog has cleared), it’s always a bit surreal. I mean, this landmark is synonymous with movie magic, and on days I see it up close, I’m reminded how lucky I am to live here and to be following my dreams.
I’ve honestly shied away from visiting the sign because not only is it a huge tourist destination, but you’re not actually allowed to hike up to the sign itself – and instead are relegated to viewing it from behind. Regardless, as we’re trying to get outdoors each weekend, I thought it was about time we made the trek.
There are a few different hikes you can take to the sign, and we opted for the most “challenging” of the three, Aileen Getty Ridge Trail. Sure, there were still other hikers, but it was much less crowded than the other routes, and we even had periods of peace by ourselves. We got a bit of a workout hiking through the different elevations and terrains, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. I’d suggest even novice hikers try their hand at this trail, as it’s definitely do-able and provides (what I can only assume) a much more enjoyable experience getting to the sign. We’re already storing this hike in our arsenal to take out-of-town guests.
I won’t spoil the hike with my words, so you’ll have to watch the video to see for yourself. If you’re planning on making a visit, check out this guide on where to park and what to expect.
P.S. A secluded hike and one with ocean views.

Thank you!! Isn’t it so fun? I can’t believe I hadn’t done it yet. Such beautiful views too. 🙂
This looks beautiful, I’d love to do it some day! I had visited Hollywood but never gone here sadly. I agree, when you live somewhere you shy away from tourist destinations but they can be fun to visit!
Sending light & love your way,

Thanks so much Diana! I’ve been here over 4 years and can’t believe I hadn’t done it before! I think the touristy part of it kept me away, but this particular hike was actually really awesome! Looking forward to taking more people here. 🙂
